National Nutrition Month actually began as National Nutrition Week in 1973 embraced by the American Dietetic Association in hopes of delivering nutritional education and information to the public. Special events were held in schools, health care facilities and community centers.
In the 70's and 80s with continual growth of the number of members, planned activities and consumers, National Nutrition Week became a local item with its members using the focus of Nutrition for public relations and with the public's growing interest in nutrition, the House of Delegates called for National Nutrition Week to become National Nutrition Month in 1980.
National Nutrition Month purpose - "to increase the public's awareness of the importance of good nutrition and position ADA members as the authorities in nutrition"
